A Guide for First Time Injectable Patients
Injectables like Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, and Restylane are great ways to quickly reverse common facial aging symptoms like wrinkles, thinning lips, and hollow areas under the eyes, temples and cheeks. The popularity of neurotoxins and dermal fillers has grown significantly over recent years as these treatments are relatively painless, require little to no recovery time, and provide quick results that can last for long periods of time.
If you’re considering injectables for the first time, here is a guide for achieving the best possible result:
Do Your Research Upfront
In today’s market there are many different types of neurotoxins and dermal fillers, each of which address different concerns.
Hyaluronic acid based fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, for example, are effective in restoring moisture and plumpness into the skin by attracting water to the treated area, while a neurotoxin like Botox or Dysport effectively reduces wrinkles by targeting overactive muscles.
It is helpful that patients understand what injectables are capable of treating and knowing what treatment results are most important to them. However, when it comes to selecting the right filler for your individual needs, the best source of knowledge will be your provider. A Cosmetic Injection Specialist with Medical Credentials, like Rose Streeter, RN, BSN can guide you to the best course of treatment to achieve your desired results.
Pick the Best Provider for your Treatment
Just like any other medical procedure selecting the right provider is of utmost importance. When deciding who to trust for your procedure, make sure each prospective provider has ample experience in using a variety of injectables and is properly (and currently) licensed. It’s always a good idea to review testimonials from previous patients or seek recommendations from friends or family.
Finally, you should always be wary of outlets that advertise deep discount bargains. While huge discounts or Groupon deals might be appealing, often lower pricing stems from a provider’s lack of experience or desperation for new patients.
Consider Maintenance Longterm
While they are long-lasting, the effects of injectables will eventually wear off. Typically results can last anywhere from four months to three years depending on the specific filler or neurotoxin used. Keep in mind that in order to maintain your desired results periodic maintenance treatments will be necessary.
Listen to your Injection Specialist – the Advice is crucial
Be sure to follow all instructions provided by your provider both before and after your treatment. Failing to follow simple instructions like not taking an aspirin before the procedure or working out after the procedure can make all the difference between a great and not-so-great treatment.
Give Yourself Enough Time To Recover
While injectables require little to no downtime, some individuals will experience minor swelling or bruising immediately following the procedure, both of which subside on their own after a few days to a week. It’s recommended to allow for a full week to fully recover before attending any big event. Also keep in mind that some injectables can take some time for the full effects to kick in. While dermal filler results are more immediate, neurotoxin results can take up to two weeks for full effect.
Not all Cosmetic Injection Specialists are the Same
While Botox is not as complicated as cosmetic surgery, choosing a heavily discounted service or new injectionist may save a few pennies; but can also have less than satisfactory results. For this reason, you want to have any work of this type done by a Cosmetic Injection Specialist with medical credentials such as Rose Streeter, RN, BSN. With over 21 years of injection experience and a nursing background, Rose stays on the leading edge with continuous training and education in medical aesthetics. How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
A common question from dermal filler patients is “How long do dermal fillers last?” The best answer to this seemingly simple question is “It depends.”
Result duration can significantly differ from patient to patient based on a number of factors including the type of filler used, which area of the face is treated, and the patient’s own metabolism level. It also depends on the area the filler is placed. If the filler is placed in a high movement area such as the lips then the filler will not last as long.
Here’s a simple chart showing the average length of time that results last for the fillers from Aesthetic Creations:
Filler Type |
Average Duration |
Juvederm Ultra |
6 to 12 Months |
Radiesse |
12 to 18 Months |
Restylane |
6 to 12 Months |
By Filler Type – Result Duration
Different fillers provide varying duration of results as illustrated in the table above. The variations in the length or results are due primarily to differing materials used in each brand’s formulation, along with the consistency of the filler (thicker fillers tend to last longer). However, it’s important to keep in mind that result duration is merely one of many factors to consider as fillers also differ in their ability to address specific aging symptoms or be used in specific facial areas.
By Facial Area – Result Duration
The area of treatment will also impact how long filler results can last. Here’s a basic summary of how long fillers typically last in each facial area:
Lips: There are many different fillers for lip augmentation (i.e. lip injections). Popular choices include Juvederm Ultra and Restylane-L, both of which can last up to 12 months.
Eyes: Hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Restylane used to treat the eyes (including the tear trough area) typically last around 12 months.
Nose: Nose enhancement through a “liquid rhinoplasty” procedure can be performed with Restylane, which can last anywhere from 9 to 12 months.
Cheeks: Restylane used to enhance the cheeks can last up to 15 months.
Corners of Mouth: Hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane produce great results, with both fillers lasting up to 1 year in the area.
Chin: Chin augmentation procedures using Radiesse often last between 16 and 24 months.
How to make Dermal Fillers Last Longer
The only way to indefinitely keep the results of fillers is to undergo periodic “maintenance” treatments. The simple touch up injections can be performed just as the results begin to wear off.
Additionally, simple habits like wearing sunscreen daily, eating a healthy diet, and practicing a good skin care regimen (shown below).
What is a Good Skin Care Regimen that helps results last longer?
The benefits of injectables (like many other cosmetic treatments) will last longer for individuals who properly take care of their skin. Patients who moisturize daily and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water will enhance the water-absorption effect of hyaluronic-based fillers, helping treated areas remain plump and wrinkle-free!
In addition to moisturizing, choose skincare ingredients that stimulate collagen production and protect your skin from free radicals. A stronger skin structure helps prolong the effects of toxin or dermal fillers. Antioxidants like Vitamin C also protect against damage from sun and pollution.
Look for collagen-boosting ingredients such as retinol or collagen peptides. You’ll find these ingredients in moisturizers, cleansers and serums.

The Difference between Botox and Fillers – and how to choose the best usage
At Aesthetic Creations, Inc. , one of the most asked questions, is what is the difference between Botox and Injectable Fillers? How do you choose the best treatment for your needs?
So in this article, we try to provide some key guidance in making this choice, and provide some information to help. Both solution are excellent non-surgical cosmetic procedures with no recovery or downtime for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, but they each have their best uses.
Let’s Talk about Botox
Botox is a neurotoxin, specifically the brand name of a specific botulinum neurotoxin. While that may sound scary, but it’s actually very safe when handled and injected properly by a Cosmetic Injections Specialist with medical credentials. Basically, Botox works by making facial muscles relax by blocking the signals that make them contract.
Botox is best is best used in areas of facial expression such as those lines that are caused by muscle contractions such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and the “11” lines between your brows, and horizontal forehead lines. Other popular non-cosmetic uses include injections in the armpits that can help stave off hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), and injections in the jaw muscle to help prevent teeth grinding caused by TMJ, or Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome.
Now – What are Injectable Fillers?
Injectable fillers are gel-like products that fill folds and creases and replenish lost volume. They can also contour the face. Most of them are comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally-occurring substance in our skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the human body. It acts as a cushioning and lubrication agent for our joints, nerves, hair, skin, and eyes. When used in skincare, it acts as a moisture binder, which means that it will attach itself to the water in the cells (while also attracting and holding water from the air) making them plump.
So which is the best choice?
The effectiveness of either procedure depends on what you’re in need of. Botox, for instance, can be used preventatively (ie. even before you’re really noticing any deep-set wrinkles), and is best for those lines that are caused by muscle contractions such as crow’s feet and frown lines and the “11” lines between your brows.
Injectable Fillers are best for eliminating wrinkles that are not due to muscle contractions in areas of the face that are at rest. The most common areas for fillers are under the eye, cheeks and jawline. Fillers are also excellent for injecting in your lips to restore lost volume and create full, voluptuous lips as well as the lines between the side of your nose and mouth.
The Ideal Solution – Combining Them for Best Results – and How they last
Frequently, the use of Botox versus Injectables is not a one-or-the-other situation. Because they are ideal for different types of lines, a cosmetic professional may sometimes recommend a combination of these two treatments together to get you the best possible results. You will start to see the wrinkle-reducing results from Botox in about 2-3 days to two weeks whereas you see results from Injectable Fillers immediately. The effects of Botox last about three to four months whereas Injectable fillers can last 6 months – 1 year on average, and 2 years plus with subsequent treatments!
